Hoewel lichtbewapend, straalt het schip (militair) ontzag uit, is wereldwijd inzetbaar en heeft een endurance van 21 dagen. Door toepassing van een (gevechts)helicopter en snelle Fast Raiding Interception & Special Forces Craft (FRISC) kon de scheepssnelheid worden beperkt tot 21,5 knoop, resulterend in een voor marineschepen klein geïnstalleerd vermogen en daarmee een energiezuinig platform.

Voor de launch&recovery van de FRISC is een innovatie installatie ontwikkeld waardoor een hoge operationele inzet in zeegang is bereikt. De bemanning in basisbezetting is beperkt tot 50 personen. Voor vervulling van specifieke taken wordt de bemanning uitgebreid met maximaal 40 specialisten. Daarnaast kan aan maximaal 100 evacuees enkele dagen onderdak worden geboden.

Damen Schelde Naval Shipping, Defensie materieel Organisatie van de KM, onderzoeksinstituten en diverse toeleveranciers hebben met de realisatie van de HMS Holland laten zien dat de Nederlandse maritieme sector een op snel veranderende militaire omstandigheden toegesneden platform kan ontwikkelen en bouwen. De HMS Holland is met zijn kleine geïnstalleerd vermogen en beperkte bemanning een zuinig schip voor de vele taken waarvoor het is ontworpen en toegerust. Dit nieuwe patrouilleschip vervult internationaal een voorbeeldfunctie en zet een trend in het segment van hoogwaardige patrouillevaartuigen.

Hr. Ms. Holland

Hr. Ms. Holland is the first vessel in a series of 4. It is a new type of ship for the Royal Dutch Navy, specifically designed for tasks in the so-called low-intensity warfare, including protection of merchant ships against piracy, prevention of escalation via maritime presence, combating smuggling, patrol duties, etc., so in general asymmetric warfare at sea. In addition, the ship is suitable for 'search and rescue' operations and can provide humanitarian assistance through supply of goods and give shelter to evacuee’s for several days. As the ship will not simultaneously be used for all these tasks, the equipment can be adapted to each specific task, the same holds for specialized crew on board. In other words modular functionality is strived for. Although lightly armed, the ship has a strong (military) appearance and is resistant to impacts of small-caliber weapons and is designed to keep toxic gases outside. The ship can be used worldwide and has an endurance of 21 days.

For the multitude of the aforementioned tasks at an acceptable contract sum and with acceptable operating costs an innovative design is realized by the Royal Navy, the building yard, suppliers and knowledge institutes in the Netherlands. By applying a (combat) helicopter and Fast Raiding, Interception and Special Forces Craft (FRISC) the ship's maximum speed could be limited to 21.5 knot, resulting in a small installed power for a navy vessel. At cruising speed, the ship is driven by a diesel-direct installation whereas at slow (patrol) speed the propulsive power is provided by a diesel-electric train. Consequently under all conditions the diesel engines are optimally loaded, which results in optimal efficiency. After extensive research an innovative launch and recovery system has been developed for the FRISC which enables high operational deployment in adverse sea conditions.

Through extensive automation, the use of an unmanned engine room, and a modular task split, the basic crew is limited to 50 persons. For specific tasks, the crew can be expanded with up to 40 specialists, like marines, helicopter crew, etc. In addition a few days shelter can be provided for some100 evacuees.

The Integrated Mast Module in which all communications and sensor systems are housed ensures optimal information supply and supports external and internal communication.

With the realization of this vessel Damen Schelde Naval Shipping, the design office of the Royal Dutch Navy, research institutes and various suppliers have shown that the Dutch maritime sector is capable to develop and to build a tailored platform to meet rapidly changing political and military circumstances. HMS Holland, with its low installed power and reduced manning, is an economical vessel for the many tasks for which it is designed and equipped. This new patrol ship internationally fulfills an exemplary role and sets a trend in the segment of high performance patrol vessels.
